Ashley is a Registered Dietitian and mother who works and resides within the Wrightwood community. She has a passion for nutrition and helping others understand how important good nutrition is for their daily life.
In the summer of 2015, Ashley had the privilege to spend five months hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and completed over 2,100 miles. For this adventure, Ashley designed, planned, prepared and packaged all of her meals for both her husband and herself. Hiking the PCT taught her that we are capable of anything and how beautiful life is. She loves to share this message with those that she interacts with, especially her students.
Since then, Ashley graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a BS in Food and Nutrition Science. She then worked as a Diet Technician at Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she worked with patients in the acute care setting. She then completed her Dietetic Internship through Department of State Hospitals – Patton. During her internship she gained experience counseling and teaching patients and individuals in various settings, including Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital, Department of State Hospitals – Patton, California Institute for Men & Women, San Bernardino City Unified School District, WIC and San Bernardino County Public Health Department. It was through her rotations at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and WIC that Ashley found her passion for improving the nutrition status of children by working with the family as a unit. Good nutrition practices start at a young age and it is vital that the family is involved.
Because of this, Ashley has founded the Fundamentals of Nutrition program by Mountain Mama RD. The mission of the program is to expose school age children to the world of nutrition science and cultural nutrition. By doing this, Ashley aims to spark an interest in children’s minds about the biochemistry involved within their bodies and cultural nutrition differences around the world.
Decisions about the type of foods consumed by a family are very personal. Reasons for adhering to a certain type of diet could be religious, cultural, geographical, budgetary, political, a necessity due to allergies or personal preferences. Ashley believes that there is not one way of eating that fits all families and situations. With advancements in research on nutrigenomics and the gut microbiome, we are learning more and more about how individualized nutrition needs really are and nothing is “one size fits all”.
